The official opening ceremony

On March 22nd of this year, Peace Home held the official opening ceremony. After three years of hard work we were proud to finally open the day-centre of Peace Home. In this post we will tell you about this special day and the days around it.

To start off, let’s talk a little bit about the preparations. In our previous post, we elaborated on the last work that was done on the exterior and interior of the day-centre, completing the the building and it’s surroundings. After this, the day-centre was ready to be put to full use.

We felt it was important for everyone involved with Peace Home to celebrate this milestone and emphasise the start of the work in the day-centre.

First, the date was decided. Next, the assembly man and his committee were informed about the date and included in the organisation. They took responsibility for inviting ‘the officials’.

The team then started focussing on the activities and other plans for the event, such as performances and speeches. We also got some help designing the poster and invitation for the event. As soon as these were done, we started hanging them up and handing them around Busua and Dixcove (villages). Aside from that, the team verbally invited a lot of people and sent out digital invitations to everyone who we felt should attend the opening ceremony.

The week of the opening ceremony was full of more physical preparations, such as decorating and finishing touches on the interior, renting chairs and canopies and shopping for the food.

The opening ceremony was a great success. The event started in the morning with people slowly coming in and getting seated. Drinks and snacks were shared around and music was playing through the sounds system a friend lent us. Another good friend, DJ Funny, came to DJ and MC for the event.

Whilst everyone was getting comfortable, a brass band from Dixcove started playing and walking through the village as is the tradition.

There was a great turnout. The ‘officials’, such as the Queen Mother, pastor, NHIS minister and representative of the Health Care minister came to support.

The pastor opened the ceremony with a small speech and was followed by a local choir that sang beautifully. Vera and the Assembly Man announced speeches and activities throughout the event and also gave their own speeches. A big donor from last year also came to speak and give a great donation to Peace Home.

The program also involved fun activities, such as traditional bamboo climbing, drumming and dancing. We also served Kelewele, rice and fish.

Of course we couldn’t leave out a moment where a ribbon was cut, officially opening the day-centre of Peace Home as the first place in the Western Region for people with special needs!

The whole team of Peace Home felt so happy and fulfilled at the end of the day.
